Why Do I Need a Multi-Vitamin?
The majority of Americans do not have a good diet. According to the USDA, only 10% of Americans have a “good diet.” Americans have continually failed to meet the RDA for several key nutrients, including calcium, vitamin E, vitamin B6, magnesium, and zinc. Other research shows that more than half of all Americans consume significantly less than the recommended intake for calcium, chromium, copper, folic acid, vitamin B6 & vitamin E. The rest needs improvement. For example, only 17% of the people consumed the recommended number of servings of fruit per day. In short, we cannot get all of the nutrients that we need on a daily basis through consumption of healthy foods, let alone the average American diet.
Nutrition & supplementation affects susceptibility to disease. Every year there are: 14 million cases of preventable heart disease, 1.2 million preventable cases of cancer, more than half a million preventable strokes, and thousands of babies born with neural tube defects that could have been prevented with a simple vitamin. The best offense is a good defense. Supply your body with the nutrients it needs to build up its immune system, the real power to fight off any disease.
The soil has been depleted of all its nutrients. From 1909 to 1994, a 3-7% decrease of Vitamin B12, magnesium, zinc and potassium levels occurred in our food supply. Growing conditions, agricultural technologies and nutrient content of the soil can reduce some nutrients in some crops by as much as 20%. Food preparations and storage methods can decrease some nutrients by as much as 30%!
Who Should Take a Multi-Vitamin?
All adults should take a multi-vitamin whether active or not. In the Journal of American Medicine on June 19, 2002, they cited “…suboptimal intake of some vitamins is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population… Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone…it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.” The Council for Responsible Nutrition advocates “the regular use of multi-vitamins and a few other nutritional supplements can measurably improve the nutritional status and lifelong health of the American public.”
What Should I Look for in a Multi-Vitamin?
Therapeutic dosages. The recommended daily values (RDA) are reflective of the requirements to merely prevent deficiency diseases, not promote a healthy lifestyle. These RDAs do not take into the effects of lifestyle, stress, environment, pollution, or other nutritional needs associated with other disease processes. Increased intake levels of nutrients, above and beyond the RDA levels demonstrate a clear benefit in disease prevention, wellness, and vibrant good health, just to name a few.
Pharmaceutical grade and manufactured in a FDA registered lab. Despite popular belief, the FDA does not “approve” or “disapprove” vitamins and supplements. However, they do make unannounced quality control inspections to labs that are registered with the FDA. So choose a vitamin that’s been manufactured in a FDA registered lab and meets the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification. This is your best bet to ensure quality manufacturing has taken place on your vitamin. It’s your body. Make sure that you are only putting high quality nutrients into it so you get maximum performance out of it.
Time released for maximum absorption. The best absorption rates take place when the vitamin bypasses the stomach and slowly breaks down in the small intestine. This provides all the nutrients your body needs throughout the day instead of a surge at first then a crash later.
More natural and organic ingredients. Your body will have an easier time breaking down and utilizing minerals and nutrients that naturally exist in nature as opposed to synthetic compounds made in a lab. Ask a sewer technician how many un-dissolved vitamins he sees in his line of work or search for the “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie” story made popular by Joel Wallach.
